Article ten thousand is <a href=\"https:\/\/gandhari.org\/dictionary\/savavivhu\"><b>Savavivhu<\/b><\/a>, the name of a Buddha of the past mentioned in a G\u0101ndh\u0101r\u012b <a href=\"https:\/\/gandhari.org\/corpus\/ckm0261\">parallel to the Bahubuddhas\u016btra<\/a> of the Mah\u0101vastu. As in the Mah\u0101vastu, in our text this buddha succeeds the buddha D\u012bpa\u1e43kara and precedes the buddha Padmottara, so his identity is not in doubt. The spellings of his name, however \u2013 <i>Sarvavivhu<\/i> and <i>Sarvaviho<\/i> \u2013 suggest a different etymology from the well-known Sanskrit form <i>Sarv\u0101bhibh\u016b<\/i> \u201call-conqueror\u201d (so Salomon 2021, 368) for which one would have expected *<i>Sarvavhivhu<\/i> or a similar form with double aspirate. <b>Savavivhu<\/b>, on the other hand, appears be derived from OIA <i>Sarvavibhu<\/i> \u201call-pervader.\u201d This form is attested as the name of King M\u0101ndh\u0101tr\u0325 in a previous birth in K\u1e63emendra\u2019s Bodhisattv\u0101vad\u0101nakalpalat\u0101, and with its second part one may further compare the bodhisattva name Vibh\u016bti in the Ga\u1e47\u1e0davy\u016bhas\u016btra. Such variations in buddha names across or even within languages are not uncommon (cf. our edition of the G\u0101ndh\u0101r\u012b <a href=\"https:\/\/gandhari.org\/corpus\/ckm0128\">Bhadrakalpikas\u016btra<\/a>), and this particular one is a welcome addition that contributes to our understanding of the pattern.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our Dictionary of G\u0101ndh\u0101r\u012b has reached 10,000 articles with a total of 69,708 references.
