{"id":473,"date":"2022-03-19T11:28:00","date_gmt":"2022-03-19T10:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gandhari.org\/blog\/?p=473"},"modified":"2023-04-23T18:40:42","modified_gmt":"2023-04-23T16:40:42","slug":"year-five-buddha-triad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gandhari.org\/blog\/?p=473","title":{"rendered":"Year Five Buddha Triad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In June 2021, when the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York had just reopened after the first wave of the pandemic, I had the opportunity to visit and inspect a very special new arrival: the Year Five Buddha Triad (<a href=\"https:\/\/gandhari.org\/corpus\/cki0232\">CKI 232<\/a>), which had been been sold at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christies.com\/lot\/lot-6277471\">auction<\/a> at Christie\u2019s the year before and is now on loan to the Museum.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/main\/plugins\/dev\/resources\/year_five_2021.jpg\" alt=\"Year Five Buddha Triad\" width=\"100%\"><br \/>\nThe donative inscription on its base is notable for providing the only attestation in Gandh\u0101ra of the Buddhist title <a href=\"https:\/\/gandhari.org\/dictionary\/trepi%E1%B8%8Daga\"><b>trepi\u1e0daga<\/b><\/a> \u201cknowing the three baskets (of the teaching),\u201d i.e., a master of the entire Buddhist canon. When I was in New York again in March 2022, I was very kindly invited to serve as respondent to Juhyung Rhi, who was delivering the Annual Distinguished Lecture on the Arts of South and Southeast Asia to a packed auditorium, in the first event of this scale hosted at the Museum since its reopening.
