{"id":178,"date":"2014-03-18T11:34:25","date_gmt":"2014-03-18T10:34:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gandhari.org\/blog\/?p=178"},"modified":"2016-10-14T04:42:13","modified_gmt":"2016-10-14T02:42:13","slug":"preliminaries-to-a-grammar-of-gandhari","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gandhari.org\/blog\/?p=178","title":{"rendered":"Preliminaries to a Grammar of G\u0101ndh\u0101r\u012b"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This Monday, at the 224th Annual Meeting of the American Oriental Society in Phoenix, I presented the paper \u201cPreliminaries to a Grammar of G\u0101ndh\u0101r\u012b: Sound System and Morphological Categories.\u201d After an overview of the main varieties of literary G\u0101ndh\u0101r\u012b, I proposed a chronology of sound changes between Old Indo\u2010Aryan and late G\u0101ndh\u0101r\u012b. I then discussed two central problems that I face in my preparation of a working grammar of G\u0101ndh\u0101r\u012b for the user of manuscript editors: the set of productive morphological categories in G\u0101ndh\u0101r\u012b and their relationship to fossilized forms, and the range and practical handling of linguistic variation in G\u0101ndh\u0101r\u012b sources.
